Precommissioning Problems

Precommissioning Problems

Corrosion During Commissioning

Any steam boiler system improperly preserved is susceptible to experience some form of corrosion. In fact, most cases of severe corrosion and consequent failure in operation, are initiated during the first stages of the project, frequently, as a result of the lack of preservation protocols, absence of regular inspections, inadequate water conditions for pressure tests and poor management system.

Analysis

Commissioning cleaning activities, such as chemical treatment or steam blowing, are intended to prepare the system for hot commissioning, and have an essential role during the first years of operation, but the integrity of the plant should not rely on its performance as, occasionally, by the time these activities are executed, the system is already damaged by the effects of the accumulation of deposits and localized corrosion.

Solution

This problem can be solved by having a great integration among the different areas of the project, follow a cleaning treatment program (which will include preservation protocoles, inspections and precommissioning verification plant) but ultimately, by assuming the final goal as a personal responsibility.
